 Procedure For Obtaining a Japanese Driver's License

A valid driver's license from your resident country itself is not valid for driving in Japan. In order to drive a vehicle in Japan. The following conditions are necessary:

1. You must have a valid driver's license from your resident country.
2. After obtaining your foreign driver's license, you stayed in the country where the license was issued for a minimum of three months(you need documents that certify your stay).
3. 
   Your address must be in Tochigi prefecture.
   • A foreign driver's license　※If you have any expired licenses after renewals, provide all of them
   • A translation of the foreign driver's license in Japanese (prepared by the embassy of your country or the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF))
   • Passport ※If you have any old passports after renewals, provide all of them
   • International driving permits (If you have any)
   • The valid Japanese driver's license -holder brings with the driver's license
   • The first applicant for Japanese license brings with
     　
     　　A certificate of residence with record of nationality or domicile of origin for a long-term or a midterm resident
   • 　　A whereabouts certificate for a short-term resident
   • The non valid (expired) Japanese driver's license-holder brings with it
   • In addition, your application for a Japanese driver's license needs a photograph (3cm×2.4cm) that was taken within the last six months
